US meets hallyu

Hallyu has finally made its way to the US. Recently, many "Korea" related materials have made their appearance in US mainstream:

  • Korean American actresses in prime time drama

  • US film companies are remaking hit Korea film (Il Mare aka The Lake House in US, My Sassy Girl aka My Sassy Girl in US which is scheduled to be in theater 2007)

  • Asian American TV channel promoting hit Korea drama

  • Popular Korea drama hits Yahoo! Buzz

  • Korea singers performed LIVE in NY MTV studio (Rain, Se7en) FYI, both of them are trying to make a debut in US very soon

  • Korea actor/actress ready to hit Hollywood

  • How will US react to the sudden hallyu wave? IMHO, I believe only Asian Americans are being hit. 90% of the audience on Asian entertainment are Asian Americans or Americans who have rich Asian culture influences.

Seriously, it's really good to finally see some Asian faces in US mainstream. US has been promoting itself as "a melting pot" country, but it's not so true in the entertainment industry. How often will you see an Asian face in a lead? Almost none in my past 16 years. The biggest roadblock for Asian to break through: language. Somehow it's a biggest "turn off" for American audience to listen to something that is non-American-accent-English (unless your role is non-American).

One mistake that most Asian artists made while trying to breakthrough: white-look. Most Asian artists think they will have a chance if they dress/act like a white. For xxx sick, can anyone of them just be proud to be Asian and act like one for once. It's time to show the world what Asian can do, not some white-look-alike-Asian.
