If you look at the nominations carefully, you'll see that The Departed is mostly nominated for the movie itself, and not the actors. I can totally understand why. It's true that the actors are great and should be nominated, but great story doesn't necessary need great actor to perform. In this case, the main dish is the story itself, and the side dishes are the actors.
Actually, I'm glad that the movie is recognize for the storyline rather than the performances. It's because it proves that great story can be successfully anywhere. I hope to see more adopted screenplay in Hollywood in the future, like Confession of Pain, After this our Exile, Exiled, Taeguki: The Brotherhood of War, 200 Pounds Beauty, etc.
(I belive My Sassy Girl is the next adopted screenplay to be in theater soon; and I hope could be a big hit this year
BTW, I'm very disappointed at the award ceremony this year because there are many mistakes on Asia related materials during the show. One BIG BIG mistake is that the host said The Departed is adopted from Japanese film
